Ballyvaughan and the Burren:
Ballyvaughan capital of the Burren is located along Irelands Mid Western coast. The Burren is recognised as one of Europe’s finest examples of a karst landscape ,at first sight a hostile looking environment, but with closer inspection an area very rich in flora, fauna and heritage. There is something here for everyone.
The Burren is a memorial to bygone cultures, with its Forts and Neolithic tombs, Celtic crosses, tower houses, mass rocks and famine villages.
In terms of Flora, the Burren holds over 70% of Irelands 900 native species on less than 1% of the area. Around Ballyvaughan in the Burren you will find a curious mixture of Artic, Alpine and Mediterranean species, with calciole and calcifuges as well a 22 native orchid species and the famous Gentian. From the Winter Heliotrope in January to the first orchids and Gentians in April to the Herb Robert in December, every month has an array of new flowering plants.
The climate of the Ballyvaughan area is described as Marine temperate, characterised by mild winters and cool summers.
